They expect us to know things word to word, whether we know the inside of it or not. We are expected to smile on their sarcasm, to entertain their ogles to earn my selves enough marks through the internal assessment. I am expected to behave myself in the viva having listen to all sorts of catcalls and comments, being compared to all the previous batches and being told that for jumbling the articles of an answer (a, an, the) I do not deserve to pass in the practical. My work of previous two years with a sign on my referred submission is always less than the butter offered by a few students throughout the year, to fetch myself a patient in the department. Not just viva, I am being convinced to check my personal life and activities to be shrewd enough to appear for a viva.
I wonder if it was a wrong step to participate in the sports and cultural events of my college, since it got me a lot of questions in viva, which had couldn’t be answered (since I wished to get passed), since university marking dangles on the pivot of our destiny. We had become well trained lions who was fleeted from the stools to have chips of marks, but not really well educated. But, how far does it matter as long as I am clearing through my sessions and being dignified as a dentist.
4 years later, I joined a doctor in his hospital after having my graduation done.
“You belong to such a grand graduate school. Didn’t they teach you anything there?” a scorn from my instructor which lead me wondering about the answer to it.
‘Why have I got this asked? I know it all in my books, though, it’s a bit difficult to relate it to what I have learnt or I have not really learnt in my graduation school. I know what is it to have a border molding; indications, pros and corns. Though, I did not get to learn to practically make it; since I couldn’t fetch myself enough patients the 3rd session onwards due to the lack of butter I got in the first two sessions. I know the vivid operator positions, since I was thorough with my journals, yet I couldn’t make it out since I was not guarded of the same while doing a patient. I can make good cavities and fill them right, but the only problem is when they are not right it is difficult to figure out the reason out of the ten disadvantages given in the book, since I could never draw enough valor to ask my teachers then because I was expected to be aware of the stuff given in all the six book affiliated to that subject. Patients abstract essentials were of no importance unless it comforted me do it for him. Then, it was of no repent for having a patient, who earns Rs. 800 a month, spending Rs. 200 to drag himself 20 km all to get brooded for me apart from the treatment cost. Five years working on a subject has given me a lot of knowledge but expertise is next to impossible, even to be expected. Interns could not have taught me what a teacher could have, but every time I asked for help I was referred to a random student next to me. Obviously, they had a lot more work to be done apart from getting us pass through our exams. Six hours of work are not enough to have college wide gossips, surfing facebook, tantalizing students and flirting.’
But how far does it matter, as long as it owes me a degree assigned from Modern Dental College and Research Center.
