TCS Playing with Indore and Indorians?

A news in Dainik Bhaskar today says that 1584 students got placed in IT companies in last 75 days. Companies like Infosys, L&T, TCS etc. have recruited scores of students from various Indore colleges. TCS (Tata Consultancy Services) alone picked 980 students from Indore.

This all looks good when you see the news without an insight in the real story.

Last year, in 2010, TCS recruited close to 650 candidates. Most of those Indore students, have not formally joined TCS yet - because they haven't received a joining date from TCS. When they followed up with TCS HR, they were informed that their joining will be somewhere around May 2012.

So, when do the students recruited in 2011 get joining then? May 2013 or 2014?

This is a big issue for students who have come all the way to Indore, away from their families and spending a good fortune on studies. Some students who have taken an education loan, can not start to repay it until they get a job and salary starts coming in.

I mean if the students recruited in last year campus selection did not get joining till date, so whats the reason to select more students and put them in misery? We have spoken to a TCS candidate who got the offer letter in Oct 09 and completed BE in May 10. Till date he has not received any call from TCS regarding his joining date.

Another problem with the whole TCS recruitment is that they almost-always want to be the first company to visit the college. That means, if you are selected in TCS, you are not eligible to participate in campus selection for other companies. Most of Indore colleges have the same rule.

So, when TCS comes for placement in Indore in month of Aug and Sep, they select the candidates and play with candidate career as he has no choice but to wait for TCS to come back with a joining date - or, look for a job elsewhere in the meantime. None of the other IT companies will recruit a fresher who is going to stay for a short duration and then leave as soon as she hears back from TCS.

And what if TCS deny their offer after 2 years? Those candidates are not fit in selection criteria of other companies; And already over 40,000 candidates pass out of engineering each year, making it even more difficult for these candidates.

Other companies like L&T, Syntel, and Infosys are also coming for placement, they recruit 30 to 40 candidates but they get joining immediately after final year results are out.

One obvious reason that comes to mind is that TCS may be delaying the joining of Indore candidates because the Indore campus construction is still pending. Instead of getting these students to go over to Mumbai or Pune or Bangalore, it may be a better idea for them to stay in Indore and start working out of Indore office once that is built. So, now is the MP Govt., IDA and the policies are to be blamed for these Student's career?

Ofcourse TCS will save a lot if they can have these 650 + 980 indore candidates start working from Indore office as soon as they can, but what are the chances they will still meet their May 2012 dates? What are the odds these 1500 odd students will not be let in a limbo for coming months, in a dilemma if to wait for TCS, or go forth and choose a new direction?

Share your thoughts and suggestions. If you know someone who is still waiting for joining from TCS or received recent joining calls, please let them know to share their stories and personal experience.
